Sailing Around the Algarve

Sailing Around the Algarve

The Algarve is Europe`s sunniest location, located in the south of Portugal it is the country`s most popular seaside resort due to its year round mild climate and beautiful coastline. With its vibrant marinas and anchorages set within such glorious weather and beautiful coastlines along with calm seas it`s the perfect place to enjoy a sailing getaway.

The eastern part of the Algarve, known as Sotavento, is characterised by long sand dunes, salt lagoons full of marine life and small, often uninhabited, islands. The central region has stylish marinas, golden beaches and rugged red cliffs. As you go further west, into Barlavento you`ll encounter unique rock formations and sandy bays which are great for snorkeling.

The marinas in the Algarve have ample mooring space and great facilities, including shipyards and other amenities such as swimming complexes, shops and restaurants. If you don`t own a boat, but want to sample sailing in the Algarve you can hire one from any major marina. There are also sailing schools to develop your skills and group sailing cruises where you can sit back and relax and pass on the navigation responsibilities! There is always a great atmosphere when you visit one of the marinas, due to the bustling crowd and the organised events and competitions.

There is much to see and do around the Algarve, both whilst sailing and when you venture on land. It is impossible whilst travelling not to appreciate your surroundings, in addition to the picturesque landscapes you are also likely to see dolphins and may even see sharks, whales and even orcas. There is also the Ria Formosa nature reserve which is a haven for wildlife especially southern European and North African birds, such as little egrets, flamingos, storks, ospreys and the rare purple gallinule.

On land there are many historic fishing villages and towns waiting to be explored with their narrow streets, ancient churches and old forts overlooking the sea. The delicious local food cannot not to be missed. There are many local restaurants offering Algarve fish and shellfish dishes or you attempt catching your own super, as the waters are ideal for big game and reef fishing where there are shark, marlin, grouper, mackerel and bass.

With the fantastic beaches and rich history, you may need to consider accommodation which could make it easier to explore the Algarve. A good value and central hotel is theĀ  Pinus Ria Hotel, which is close to many beaches and also great for golfers, who will be staying so close to some of the best championship courses in Europe.
